Bland, Bobby / His California Album

Genre : R&B Length : 38:05
Out Date : 1999 Tracks : 10 Rate : 50%
This was Bobby Bland's first California based ABC - Dunhill Records effort after that label had absorbed his previous company, Duke Records, and Mr. Bland's contract.

The 1973 effort was an auspicious new label debut, producing Bland's 22nd R&B top hit ("This Time I'm Gone for Good" hit #5) and another top 20 hit ("Goin' Down Slow at #17) The album also was the first by Bobby to climb onto the "Top Pop Albums" chart in almost a decade, spending 19 weeks thereon.

Numbers aside, this was and is an excellent representation of Bobby's coolly expressive brand of blues. The strong songs range from the usual gritty material by "Deadric Malone" (the pseudonym for Duke president Don Robey) to classic blues sides to then contemporary hits like "I've Got To Use My Imagination," and Bobby pulls each off with equal aplomb. Steve Barri, more noted for pop poridutins, presents the great voice in a full but restrained setting, and the all star L.A. sidemen support beautifull, although a bit anonymously.

Although ish classic "Duke" period was behind him, Bobby Bland displayed on the album that there were still many great recordings left for that glorious voice to conquer.
